The Perth Mint launched the Platinum Koala Series in 1988 as part of its growing range of bullion coin programs. As the debut issue, the series introduced the concept of featuring Australia’s native wildlife with annually changing designs—a strategy that would later inspire other popular series, including the Silver Kookaburra and Silver Koala.
